A Guide to Using MediaWiki in a Hosted Environment
An instructional website by the developer of mh370wiki.net - a MediaWiki site about Malaysia Airlines Flight MH370.
Predefined Groups
Some of the groups predefined for MediaWiki are listed below. For the full list (and more detail) see Manual:User rights.
- sysop
- Users who by default can delete and restore pages, block and unblock users, etc.
- interface-admin
- Users who can edit sitewide CSS and JavaScript.
- bureaucrat
- Users who can change the rights of other users by default and therefore have full access of the entire wiki.
- user
- Registered accounts. Does not include temporary accounts.
- autoconfirmed
- Registered accounts at least as old as $wgAutoConfirmAge and having at least as many edits as $wgAutoConfirmCount.
- *
- All users (including anonymous).
Custom User Groups
Custom user groups could be based on an Organisation Stucture where the user's rights relate to their job role, level of responsibility, or expertise.
If the MediaWiki content is classified by namespace, user groups could be created to edit specific namespaces whilst having read-only rights to other areas.
In a self-managed MediaWik-based website there is not likely to be any need for custom groups.
